While some people got up at 5am to go to the beach for sunrise, I stayed snoozing until we left at 7:30am. We stopped for a walk at the Karangahake Gorge for a beautiful short walk, before grabbing a sandwich for lunch at a local cafe. We arrived at the Kiwi Paka Hostel, a lodge with beautiful views and no bunks beds – woohoo!

After a quick change into a swimsuit, I was ready for black water caving – three hours of exploring underground caves sounds incredible, in reality it was more three hours freezing my ass off in wetsuits that were already damp (yes putting on a cold and wet wetsuit really is as disgusting as you can imagine!)

After shivering before I even entered the water, I was starting to doubt whether the next three hours of trip was a good idea…but it turned out to be an awesome experience (even if you don’t like small spaces!)

Floating through the river on round rubber rings, 65 metres below the ground gazing up at the glow worms is a sight I’ll never forget!

Warm soup, toasted bagels, a hot shower, ice cold cider and a few games of pool back at Curlys Bar (local pub) was the perfect way to finish an exhausting, but unforgettable day!
