Flying solo – hand luggage essentials

For those of you who haven’t flown solo before,  yes it’s terrifying (especially when it’s a long-haul flight!), but thousands of people do it daily, so if you are having last minute jitters or are just at a loss about what to pack in your hand luggage, here are my top tips:

Pre-flight check list:

  • Check-in online and print off your boarding pass (this way you can go straight through to the bag drop area in the airport)
  • If you are flying from a large airport make sure you know what terminal you are flying from (some airports are like mini cities cough*heathrow*cough – so this can save you a lot of time and money circling the car parks!)
  • Print off any hostel/hotel documents
  • Make sure you know how to get from the airport to your hostel the other end, otherwise you may end up looking like a lost puppy, as well as being out of pocket from an expensive taxi ride!

What to pack in your hand luggage:

  • Buy a backpack – honestly the BEST decision travel luggage wise I’ve made (make sure it’s the right size, the maximum size for most airlines is: 55cm x 40cm x 25, remember to check with the airline you’re flying with before buying any snazzy bags)
  • Pashmina (I find most aeroplanes are freezing so having a pashmina is the perfect multi-purpose blanket)
  • Travel pillow (try and buy a blow up one – it saves so much room in your bag)
  • Eye mask and ear plugs
  • Water bottle (I recommend any stainless steel bottles, they keep water cold for so much longer)
  • Phone/kindle/iPad/iPod
  • Rechargeable battery charger (super handy if you want to watch films or binge watch a series on the plane!)
  • Wallet and document holder
  • I also carry my camera and go pro in my hand luggage too

Toiletries wise: obviously anything you pack had to be under 100ml and there had to be less than 10 items in total in a 25cm x 25cm clear plastic bag (you can get these at airport security or your local supermarket before hand if you like to be super organised – guilty!)

  • Toothbrush and mini tooth paste (an attempt to make me feel less disgusting…)
  • Face wipes
  • Face cream (my skin gets sooo dry on planes)
  • Deodorant (roll on, not spray!)
  • Perfume
  • Lip stick

I hope that if you’re stuck on what to pack it’s given you an idea – happy travelling and good luck!
